Developed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Mumbai Pune Expressway is one of the first highways in the country. The project was conceptualised in the year 1990 and took twelve years to complete. The Mumbai Pune Expressway was opened to the public in 2002 and was named Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway initially.
The expressway has six lanes with four access-controlled toll plazas with two carriageways. The Mumbai Pune Expressway has five interchanges on the route, which include Kon, Chowk, Khalapur, Kusgaon and Talegaon and has reduced the overall commutation time to two hours.

Mumbai Pune Expressway History
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway was initially proposed in 1990 and is a 94.5-kilometre-long modern highway connecting Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra. The construction began in 1997 to alleviate congestion and reduce travel time between the two major cities. Inaugurated on April 1, 2002, the expressway was named after Yashwantrao Chavan, a prominent political leader.
This Mumbai Pune Expressway revolutionised the overall connectivity and cut short the total time from 4-5 hours to 2-3 hours. The engineering marvel features multi-lane carriageways, grade-separated interchanges, and picturesque views of the Western Ghats.

Mumbai Pune Expressway is home to a total of five toll plazas with Kalalpur and Telgaon being the major ones. The toll rates are collected at all of these toll plazas.
