Mumbai Metro route 2024, the financial capital of India, is rapidly changing its face with back-to-back infrastructure development. Moreover, the influx of people in the city is further pushing the infrastructure ahead. According to one report, the city’s population is set to reach around 28 million by 2030. So, imagine the transportation requirement to manage this increasing population.
In 2004, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) unveiled a plan to offer citizens easy and fast rapid transit services. Mumbai Metro is the biggest and most successful transit service currently in Mumbai.
Started with the Mumbai Metro Line between Ghatkopar-Versova, at present multiple lines will go to Metro Line 10 in the coming future. Recently, Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Underground Metro) the 33.5 km still under construction, started its operation from BKC to Aarey Colony, covering Marol Naka. It is called the Aqua Line, and recently the total ridership went on to over 2,00,000, and Marol Naka is the peak spot.
The Maharashtra government implemented this mass rapid transit service Mumbai Metro in 2006, and has been highly successful among riders. Metro 2A and Metro Line 7 are some routes nearing completion. The rest of the lines are in various stages of construction.

Mumbai Metro Operational Lines
Since most of the metro lines are in different stages of construction. We have listed both the completed one and the under construction for better understanding.
Mumbai Metro Line 1 Route- Versova- Andheri- Ghatkopar
The Mumbai Metro Line 1 operated between Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar is the very first project under the mass rapid transit project. Initially, the speed was 65kmph which was increased to 80kmph with 18 additional daily trips. Since this route is highly commercially operated, there are daily more than 1lakh commuters using this transit.
Reliance Infrastructure holds 69% of the stake and is the first blue line in the financial city. The metro line covers 11.4 km and has 12 stations. This line aims to reduce the traffic congestion of the locality between Ghatkopar and Andheri.

Mumbai Metro Route 2 (2A-2B) Yellow Line- Dahisar to Mandale
The second project under Mumbai Metro 2024 route line 2 runs between Dahisar to Mandale. There are two different operations- 2A and 2B (Under Construction). It was inaugurated in August 2009 by then-President Pratibha Patil. The total length covered is 42 km with 37 stations (2A- 17, 2B 20) coming under it.
The 2A Line runs between Dahisar (east) and DN Nagar. Line 2 runs from ESIC Nagar to Mandale.
Line 2A is an elevated metro network and both these lines are built with the cost Rs 17,000 crores under multiple phases. Since its operation, the traffic has been reduced on the WEH and link road.

Metro Line 3- Underground Metro Aqua Line- Colaba- Bandra- SEEPZ Line
The 33 km Metro Line Route 2024 called the Aqua Line is an underground metro running from Navy Nagar (south) to Aarey Depot. It will include existing and upcoming metro lines along with the Mumbai International Airport. Built with a budget of more than Rs 30,000 crore, five major groups are funding the project: MMRCL, Padeco, MMRDA, CREC, and JICA.
A total of 27 stations are covered between Cuffe Parade to Aarey Colony. The operation of Phase 1 of line 3 began in October 2024 and the footfall has increased 5% more than expected. The Aqua Line is expected to be complete by May 2025. All the stations are underground 10-14 metres below the ground level.

Metro Line 4 Route- Wadala (Mumbai) to Kasarvadavali (Ghodbunder road, Thane)
The Green line stretching over 35k will operate between Wadala (Mumbai) to Kasarvadavali (Ghodbunder road, Thane). It is an elevated double-track viaduct (U-girders) and includes a total of 30 stations. As an extension of the current general consulting contract, the project was given to a group consisting of Louis Berger, Hill International, and DB Engineering & Consulting.
In addition to rail systems including tracks, signaling, telecommunications, power supply, automated fare collection, and overhead contact line systems, the project also includes civil infrastructure elements such as elevated viaducts, stations, depots, and stations with associated workshops. The overall cost of the project is Rs 64,000 crore.

Mumbai Metro Route Line 5- Thane with Kalyan via Bhiwandi
The upcoming Mumbai Metro route, which is an orange line 4 will cover 24.9km connecting Thane with Kalyan via Bhiwandi. The total cost for this project is around Rs 7500 crore and is under construction. On December 18, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the cornerstone for Kalyan’s Line 5.[8][9] The MMRDA announced in June 2019 that it had decided to begin Line 5 at Kapurbawdi station, which would act as an interchange with Line 4. The initial idea was to construct a distinct station 500 meters from Line 4 stop.
There were two stages to the 24.9-kilometer line’s construction. The first phase consists of an 11.68 km stretch that connects Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi with Kapurbawadi in Thane. Between Bhiwandi and Kalyan, the second phase spans 11.8 km, including a 3 km subterranean segment between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar.

Mumbai Metro Route Line 6- Vikhroli (E) to Jogeshwari, WEH, Powai
The Pink Line 6 Mumbai Metro will connect the Lokhandwala Complex with Vikhroli and will have 13 stations. This under-construction 14.5 km route will pass through Powai connecting to Vikhroli EEH starting from Lokhandwala. It provides interchange capabilities at various sites, including Gandhi Nagar for Line-4, Aarey Depot station for Line-3, JVLR station for Line-7, and Adarsh Nagar for Line-2A.
Like other Metro lines, it features an integrated ticketing system, escalators, lifts, and stairwells, as well as better walkways with ramps for the elderly and those with disabilities. The Rs 6,000 crore Mumbai metro Line 6 project will operate from 2025.

Mumbai Metro Line 7 (Andheri East- Dahisar East)
The 33 km red line 7 of Mumbai Metro will run between Andheri (e) and Dahisar (e) passing through Mumbai International airport. It will connect the current Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to D N Nagar), Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli), and the Western Express Highway.
Two sections of the line were launched on April 2, 2022, from Dahisar East to Aarey, and on January 19, 2023, from Aarey to Gundavli in Andheri (East). Red Line 9 includes an 11.386 km segment of Line 7 from Bhayander to Dahisar that is currently under construction. Additionally, a southerly extension of the airport is also being built. The cost of the project is around Rs 6518 crore.

Mumbai Metro 8- Gold Line
The Mumbai Metro’s Gold Line 8 is an airport express line that serves Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. It would provide direct service between Mumbai’s CSMIA Airport and Navi Mumbai’s NMIA Airport. The route would be entirely elevated at 35 km (21.74 mi). On this line, eight metro stations with a 15-minute frequency have been proposed.
Mumbai Metro Line 9
Mumbai Metro Line 9 is an extension to Metro Line 7 from Andheri to CSIA and Dahisar to Mira Bhayander and is 13.581 km long (11.386 km elevated and 2.195km underground) with 10 stations. The fact that this line will cross a double-decker bridge will set it apart from the other metro lines. The metro will operate on the second deck, while a flyover will be located on the first level.
Close to the projected Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) metro station, the flyover will travel via Mira Bhayander Road to Bhayander (West). The Western Line, the Mumbai Metro (Lines 2 and 7), and the Western Express Highway will all be connected by it.

Deadlines for New and Existing Mumbai Metro Route Lines
- Several Mumbai Metro route lines are presently under construction, with phase 1 of the line began its operation in October 2024.
- With an anticipated completion date of June 2025, 60% of the elevated Metro Line 2B project has already been finished.
- By mid-2025, Metro Lines 4 and 4A should be finished, covering 35.2 kilometres.
- Metro Line 5’s first phase is almost finished, with a December 2025 completion date.
- With an anticipated completion date of December 2024, Metro Line 6 has achieved 73.25% progress towards the completion of the civil construction overall.
Total Ridership in Mumbai Metro Route
Since the Mumbai metro route covers the maximum part of the city, the ridership is increasing daily. As of July 2024, the daily ridership was around 7lac which is set to grow in the coming months.
